On the weekend of 14 and 15 January, 45 scouts from across the
county gathered in Altrincham to take part in the second Greater
Manchester West Shooting competition. The competitors were aged
from 10 to (well) over 18 and were divided into two age groups,
under 14, and 14 and over.

The 2011 GMW Hiking Competition was based around the Bowley
Scout Campsite being held on the 15th October. Again this was a
combined event with 5 scout teams and 3 explorer teams. The teams
were lucky enough to have bright sunshine with most completing the
10 mile hike with a few deviations for some. At the presentation 4

The county held a brainstorming session early July on two topics
close to scout leader's hearts and which were giving them problems.
The two subjects were as follows.
Getting PLs and Patrols working in the scout age 10.5 to 14 age
range.
How to get Scout Forums working to give scouts the
voice.

This years county camping and backwoods competitions included a
network patrol (who had a medieval theme) as well as the scout

With the "More girls join scouts" census headline
still in the news a patrol full of girls from 88th
Salford won the 2011 Lord Derby competition. This was held on
Saturday 16th April at Dunham Scout camp site on another
specially ordered sunny day. This year 5 patrols from

The Greater Manchester West team ended up in 8th position
overall out of 14
teams in the Inter-County Shooting competition held on the 27th
March 2011.
This was a great performance from a squad that only started
serious training 2 months ago, and included only three members with
previous rifle experience and nobody having shot air pistol before
that. Well done everybody.

The 2011 2MAD4 Leaders was held at Bradley Wood on the
last weekend in March. This year more activities seemed
to have been crammed in for the leaders to try and survive! But
they did all survived and most can't wait for next year's
event.

The first GMW PLs Have Your Say Event was held on the 22nd Jan
2011 at Lilford District HQ. We had 4 scouts from Quest
Scouts (Stretford district), 3 scouts from 2nd
Brooklands (Sale district) and 3 scouts from
3rd/1st Eccles (Ellesmere district) plus

The Scout Association recently introduced an Entrepreneur Award
and Scouts from the 14th Sale are amongst the first in
the country to gain it.
In just six weeks they formed a company, called
'MY MUGZ', elected Directors, resourced, produced and sold
personalised mugs and finally made a presentation to a 'Dragons
Den' panel.

2010 Hiking Competition
Unlike last year the hiking competition this year went slightly
urban although with still quite a bit of countryside. The GMW scout
and explorer competition was held around the Ashton-In-Makerfield
area on the 26th Sept. It started at 3 Sisters countryside park and
ended up at 1st Ashton HQ going via Billinge Beacon.

Cheshire was ready to welcome the
World!
3rd/1st Eccles this year decided to go
global, but in the international playground that is Cheshire!
We started to set up camp 2 days before the opening, in order to
escape the inevitable mêlée that is typical of a large camp,
and a large camp it was, having 3,500 scouts plus another 1000 cubs
and beavers over the first weekend.

On the weekend of the 10th to 12th September 41 Scouts from the
Sale district survived the Omega Camp. This is a survivial camp
held at Giant's Seat campsite, where they had to build shelters,
scavange for food, gut and skin rabbits, identify what birds you
can eat from their feathers plus cook. 11 Teams from the 7th Sale,

Both of the competitions for the explorers and scouts were held
in at Bispham Hall on the last w/e in June. 2nd
Davyhulme won the Scout's camping and Explorer's backwoods cooking
competitions, 3rd/1st Eccles won the Scout's
Backwood competition and 1st Flixton won the Explorer's
camping competition. 7 scout team and 5 explorer teams entered.

The Swinton and Pendlebury District Scout Orienteering day was
held on Saturday 3rd July 2010 at Haigh Hall. The day
was a great success and the weather was warm and sunny.
The event was attended by 14th Swinton, !st Clifton
and 12th Swinton Scout Troops, there were leaders from
the Groups assisting with the event and 14th Swintons

Having just been awarded the Silver Acorn I was lucky
enough to be able to attend the St. Georges day parade at Windsor
on the 25th April this year. Prince Charles (for the first time
ever) took the salute with the Chief Scout Bear Grylls in
attendance. Prince Charles talked to a number of the Queens Scouts
where as Bear as well as talking to the explorers tried to shake
all their hands. T

The 2010 GMW Lord Derby competition where teams fought for the
John Bell trophy was held on the 10th April at the
Middlewood scout campsite. Like last year I ordered perfect sunny
weather and the 5 teams enjoyed the 9 bases put by leaders of the
county. These included a minefield, sheepdog trials and making a
perfect square all these being blindfolded. On top of these they

The 2010 2MAD4 Leaders was held at Linnet Clough on the last
weekend in March. As tradition has it this being the time
where the clocks go forward. But the harden leaders of GMW can cope
with more lack of sleep (at least some can).

The 2009 Lord Derby competition had 8 teams competing in 11
bases in April. These included making camp doughnuts, putting up a
tent blindfold, skiing with carrying water and getting the team 1
metre off the ground. Well done to the 4th

The County Camping and Backwoods competitions were held together
at the site of the 5th Urmston in June 2009. This site
proved an ideal setting for the two competitions as each of the 7
patrols had their own campsites. Well done to the 2nd
