Adventurous Activities
Scout Network programmes will reflect the huge variation in
Members' interests. Some local Networks will have activities that
concentrate on one area of the programme, whilst others will have a
wide rang of activities. One of the most important elements of any
programme is the opportunity for residential events, whether under
canvas or using other accommodation.

Preparing for activities
Before carrying out any activity it is important to consider the
following questions -
- Why are you doing the activity?
- What are you going to do?
- Who is going to take part?
- How will you tell people about it?
- What arrangements do you need to make in advance?
- Where is it going to happen?
- When is it going to happen?
- What are the costs involved?
- How will you get there?
- Will it be a 'Member only' activity, or will involve friends
and potential recruits?
Remember that parent or carer consent will be required for any
Members under 18. Members aged 18 and over should complete their
own declarations.
Safety issues
All activities in Scouting should be conducted in a safe
environment. There are clear rules regarding Scouting activities
and, in particular, adventurous activities. They are designed for
the welfare of the participants and not to restrict activities
taking place. There are rules in place for:
- Residential experiences, including camping
- Hill-walking
- Mountain biking
- Climbing and abseiling
- Caving and potholing
- Water activities
- Air activities
- Snow sports
There are a few activities that are not allowed by The Scout
Association. These include paintball games and bungee jumping.
Details of the authorisation schemes for adventurous activities
can be obtained from your County or Area or from the Scout
Information Centre. They can also be found in Policy, Organisation
and Rules.
