Volunteer Learning

The best way we can support volunteers in Scouting is to provide them the a comprehensive training offering to ensure we are giving them the skills for the role and building upon their prior knowledge and existing skills. In January 2020, we re-launched a new look course offering ensuring flexibility for our volunteers who live very busy lives outside of Scouting.

Woodbadge Learning Opportunities

Getting Started

Ideally, the Getting Started group of modules should be completed locally, however in Greater Manchester West we are providing three opportunities per year on our training weekends for you to complete this with our team of expert training advisors.

Time: 2 hours

Modules Covered:
1. Essential Information
2. Personal Learning Plan (PLP)
3. Tools for the Role.
In addition, an Introduction to Mandatory Training

L2L (1) Learning to Leader – Part 1

This course will cover the learning for the first set of modules for your wood badge training. We will be providing three opportunities for volunteers to attend this course on our training weekends throughout the year.

Time: approx. 5 hours

Modules Covered:
5. Fundamentals of Scouting
6. Changes in Scouting
7. Scouting for All
8. Working with Adults
9. Skills of Leadership
11. Administration
14. Supporting Young People

L2L (2) Learning to Leader – Part 2

This course will cover the learning for the second set of modules for your wood badge training and is aimed at volunteers who are further into their training journey, heading towards the completion of the first 19 modules. We will be providing three opportunities for volunteers to attend this course on our training weekends throughout the year.

Time: approx. 8 hours

16. Introduction to Residential Experiences

18. Instructing a Practical Skill

First Response (Mandatory Training)

This course is delivered locally, however we offer an additional three additional opportunities for volunteers to complete this mandatory training at our training weekends. This course is suitable for new volunteers or those who need to refresh their mandatory training.

Time: 6 hours

Cost: £10.00, payable to County Office before the course.

Safeguarding (Mandatory Training)

This course is delivered within your Districts by our team of Safeguarding Trainers, however we offer an additional three opportunities for volunteers to complete this mandatory training at our training weekends. This course is suitable for new volunteers or those who need to refresh their mandatory training. For new volunteers, the face-to-face course is essential.

Time: 2.5 hours

Nights Away Learning and Skills Opportunities

L2A (I) Learning to Away – Indoor

The first part of our Learning to Away course will be delivered with learning aimed at leaders looking to gain indoor permits. Participants wishing to complete learning for the outdoor permit would also attend L2A(O) Learning to Away – Outdoor.

Time: approx. 8 hours

Modules Covered:
38. Skills for Residential Experiences

L2A (O) Learning to Away – Outdoor

The second part of our Learning to Away course is aimed at leaders wanting to complete learning for the Nights Away Permit, including outdoor residential experiences.

Time: approx. 8 hours (or combined over a weekend with L2A Indoor)

L2C Learning to Camp

This course is a complimentary learning opportunity to the L2A courses, It will offer a full range of practical camping skills.

Time: One Weekend (Saturday and Sunday)

L2S Learning to Skill-Up

This learning opportunity will provide time to improve skills in practical areas for outdoors, indoors, camping and group nights. You will have your say via a survey as to what skills will be covered. Sessions will be available in 2-5 hour slots for you to choose to attend.

Extended Learning Opportunities

L2I Learning to Include

Inclusivity training delivered by the HQ Team of Specialist Advisors for Inclusion and Diversity, covering a range of inclusive topics.

Time: approx. 6 hours (option to drop in different sessions)

L2I (DA) Learning to Include – Diversity Awareness

(Link to Module 26) Awareness training to increase understanding of issues surrounding LGBTIQA+ and how we can develop more inclusive and welcoming environments within our groups.

Time: approx. 2 hours

L2I (MH) Learning to Include – Mental Health

An awareness learning opportunity to increase our understand of the mental health needs of our young people.

Time: approx. 2 hours

L2I (AA) Learning to Include – Ability Awareness

An awareness learning opportunity to increase understand of the extended needs of some of our young people with different abilities.

Time: approx. 2 hours

L2E Learning to Exec

A learning opportunity for those wishing to be on an executive committee.

Time: approx. 6 hours (option to drop in sessions)

L2A Learning to Assess

(Module 25T) This is a full day course providing the learning opportunities for assessing the learning of others. Ideally for training advisors.

Time: approx. 6-8 hours

L2S Learning to Support

A support to module 30 and 39, this learning opportunity is aimed as an interim support for managers and supporters.

Time: approx. 2 hours

L2P Learning to Plan

A learning opportunity aimed at those wishing to reduce paperwork and increase productivity.

Time: approx. 2 hours

L2T Learning to Training

A learning opportunity aimed at those wishing to provide training experiences.

Time: approx. 4 hours

Management and Support Training

The offering of training for those in manager and supporter roles is delivered by the North West Region. \

There are three courses that provide the learning for the Manager and Supporter modules.
